SUMMER STEM: Learn 3D Design & 3D Printing

Having taught beginner 3D design and 3D printing to students at Southridge Elementary for years as a volunteer, I’m expanding to take in students this summer on a sliding scale for a fun, 4-session class! All ages & parents welcome to attend!

Learn the basics of 3D design, simple animation and 3D printing. Design, animate and print your own idea, from a tool to a toy!

Here is a flying saucer built in 3D and ready for 3D printing. This saucer opens and closes, allowing for alien occupants to enter and exit the craft.

The goal of this summer STEM class is digital creativity. Come in, discuss ideas, talk about what you and/or your child would like to build. Let’s make it in 3D, animate it, and print it out. Work as a parent child team, or have your child attend by themselves. All that said, interested parents are firmly encouraged to be a part of it all. Various dates/times are available below.

What’s in the Class?

This is a beginner “Design in 3D” class for all ages. All participants in the class will learn the basics of mapping out an idea, considering the idea’s function, setting up a 3D model, preparing said model for 3D printing, and then witnessing the printing process. Final aspects will be “post-production” work on the 3D printed model(s), which may include some light sanding as well as putting parts together for their ultimate function (e.g. put the wheels on the car axles). Each class participant will be able to take their final model home with them. The class will be held at my house in Vancouver, Wa.

Class Fee & Schedule

The charge for the 4-session, beginner 3D Design class is $250 for a single child or parent, or $400 for a parent/child team. I offer a sliding scale for this fee, so please let me know your needs. The class schedule is set for (four) consecutive Tuesday’s (1st class June 28) or four consecutive Wednesday’s (1st class June 29). NOTE: Upon direct request I will offer PRIVATE INSTRUCTION at TBD days/hours to individuals and/or small, organized groups. The fee for private instruction will be determined by the size of the group, number of classes sought, etc.

Here is a 1/50 scale model playground built by Ms. Marshall’s first grade class in 2019. A functional zip line and trampoline, along with removable rooftops and a “donut snack shack” round out this great creation.

Equipment Needs

It is recommended that you can bring a laptop for use in the class, although this is not required. If working without a laptop, there will be less “hands-on,” yet the class will still be informative and instructive (similar to the experience I’ve been offering in the SouthRidge classrooms). For children not adept at laptop usage, and also attending alone, it is recommended at last one parent or caregiver attend the beginning of class 1 to ensure transference of laptop and software use knowledge.

What’s Next?

Fill out the form below and let me know which session you’d like to attend, who will be attending, etc... I’ll communicate back with you to confirm and we’ll be off to the races. BTW…as students “graduate” from this beginner class, I’ll likely offer an intermediate engagement opportunity for those that want to continue learning the basics of industrial design and its application in 3D animation, printing, and prototyping.
